I’ll be a knight.” Alanna has always craved the adventure and daring allowed only for boys; her twin brother, Thom, yearns to learn the art of magic. So one day they decide to switch places. Disguised as a girl, Thom heads for the convent; Alanna, pretending to be a boy, is on her way to the castle of King Roald to begin her training as a page. But the road to knighthood is not an easy one. As Alanna masters the skills necessary for battle, she must also learn to control her heart and to learn who her enemies are. "Loved this one as a kid!!"

"This was my favorite book when I was eight years old and honestly, it’s still a cool book. I have reread this book many times, and it’s always enjoyable. The action is interesting, as are young Alanna’s struggles. It isn’t perfect, but due to the age group for this book, that makes sense. That said, I would totally recommend this book to kids now (but suggest they wait a bit before reading the later books). Alanna is a brave, stubborn, and determined heroine who does not care about gender norms and works hard for what she wants"

"I have loved this book for years. It is a go to comfort read in print or audio format and one I recommend to all lovers of YA with strong female characters.

Pros:

This is one of the original found family style books that I love. You meet characters seemingly slowly but before you know it you have this amazing group that you want to know more about.

Cons:

I just wish the book and series were longer and had more of Alanna’s adventures."
