"2.5⭐ "Being a policeman is a powerful position. It's a responsibility. You can really screw with people's lives if you don't do it right." (247) I have sort of a strange review for Conviction - I believe that this book has its heart in the right place, but it didn't bring anything new to the conversation about wrongful convictions. My sister volunteers with The Innocence Project, and is truly passionate about wrongful conviction cases. This has rubbed off on me a bit, and I was very excited when Faber Books offered me a copy of this book. Part of the problem was that there was a lot going on - time jumps, multiple storylines about reporters, cops, possible witnesses, crime bloggers, people in the legal field, etc. Because all of this was happening, it was tough to connect with the main characters. I feel like there was a lot of background information about the wrong things, and not enough about the things that would have helped me to be invested in this story. There wasn't much happening that you don't already know if you're familiar with wrongful conviction cases - false confessions, shady "interview tactics", concealing evidence, etc. The story was pretty basic, and I feel like it was lacking in creativity and depth. It was an interesting concept, and a great idea, but it was just so slow. The conclusion seemed kind of far-fetched to me, and once again, I felt like emphasis was placed on the wrong characters and storylines (in my personal opinion). Conviction is the third book in the Rebekah Roberts series, and it was quite easy to jump in. I am grateful for that. Thank you so much to Faber Books for offering me a copy of this book!"
