"This book and the next in the series were picked specifically because James Marsters was narrating them. As he did with the Dresden Files, this was lovely to listen to. I would give his performance 4/5 (only less than a five because he does so amazingly well with the Dresden Files with so many unique characters he has had time to develop).

Pros:

Like any good second book in a trilogy, this book doesn’t take a rest. There is always something major happening and if you aren’t paying attention you will miss something that is going to matter somewhere else.

The characters are beginning to develop and expand as we are able to spend more time with them. No one is one dimensional even if they’re mentioned in passing.

Cons:

I really enjoyed the slow build of Alec revealing he was gay and falling into what seems to be true love with Magnus in the Immortal Instruments. I expected this series to focus on neuro-divergent individuals getting a voice and respect based on the uncle from book one and Julian’s younger brother. Instead it seems that the author has decided to play “hot topic book bingo. We are including potentially poly relationships, a hidden trans individual and neuro-divergence. By cramming them all in one book it feels like lessening each of them. These are hugely under represented communities with a lot of troubles to overcome in the real world and this book. Each of them has enough for at least one book if not a trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad there is representation but it feels rushed and like a game of how many things can I include and try to highlight without truly giving them the full spotlight."
