Sonali Dev
Award-winning author Sonali Dev launches a new series about the Rajes, an immigrant Indian family descended from royalty, who have built their lives in San Francisco...It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep. Dr. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family who’s achieved power by making its own non-negotiable rules:· Never trust an outsider· Never do anything to jeopardize your brother’s political aspirations· And never, ever, defy your familyTrisha is guilty of breaking all three rules. But now she has a chance to redeem herself. So long as she doesn’t repeat old mistakes.Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. He needs the lucrative job the Rajes offer, but he values his pride too much to indulge Trisha’s arrogance. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.As the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. But before a future can be savored there’s a past to be reckoned with...A family trying to build home in a new land.A man who has never felt at home anywhere. And a choice to be made between the two.

"I really wanted to like this book, and there were a couple of good parts, but the leads were both so annoying with their constant misunderstandings. It was never really clear why they came to like each other. Add on to that doctors who only understand medical ethics when it's convenient, a so-called genius who didn't realize that disabled people can have hobbies, a psychic for some reason, the worst use of sexual assault in a book I've read this year (and then blaming the victim's inability to get justice on the metoo movement, hashtag feminism) and every conflict miraculously being resolved into a perfect little bow right at the end, and you've got a book I just didn't enjoy very much."

"I am a sucker for character growth, and the main characters in this book were definitely forced to examine their flaws and past mistakes. The description of the food throughout made me crave every single dish. The characters felt unique and real, and the plot had some turns that kept it interesting. The only issue I had was that the first half of the book felt repetitive and almost too detailed - almost like the same messages could have been accomplished in a more concise way. I feel like you can only reference something that happened so many times before a reader gets tired of hearing about it. In this case, I was so tired of hearing vague descriptions of the Yash and Julia situation over and over. "Past mistakes" would have given me enough to know what the narrator was talking about. But the last half of the book was so fun that I didn't want to stop reading! (Thanks to my local library for picking this one out for me!)"
"It’s one of those happy ending books that makes your heart smile. Loved it!"
