"I am a long time admirer of Viggo Mortensen. Since 1985 I have followed his career. This movie is very emotional for me as the mother's struggle I know too well. Viggo and the rest of the cast are genuinely wild and broken at the same time. Going through the process as a single parent with outside the norm ideals is painful. Everytime I watch this, I cry. I cheer for him and the kids the entire way. Very much worth experiencing for yourself. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
"After my third rewatch, I can confidently say this is one of the most thought provoking movies I’ve ever seen. On the surface, it’s themes are pretty straightforward: the difficulties of being a parent and how to deal with grief. Those themes are no doubt part of the message of this film, but I think it promotes even deeper existential questions about the human condition and the meaning of life in modern America.
Why should we follow the Status Quo? Who/what defines the right way to live? Why do we willingly (and sometimes blindly) accept the way modern society functions? Why is philosophy and intellectual logical discourse not a more common part of the education system? How should we talk to our children? Are we really doing them a favor by protecting them from certain realities of life?
Unbelievable performances all around. This movie has shaped the way I view the world and I will always view it as one of the reasons I fell in love with cinema. 10/10!"
"Hard to think of words to describe this one. Good movie. The dad doesn't falter from his beliefs. He teaches the kids so well. Everyone else has a hard time understanding them and think that they are strange but really they're so disciplined and smarter than everyone else. For his kids he almost changes but they stick together and do what they believe is right for their family. Love Viggo, forgot he was in this one. "
"I usually don't like child actors, but they're all great in this movie. This film avoids many clichés it could have fallen into. Every character decision made sens to me. The characters are well developped and have interesting arks. As a father and husban, I was deeply touched. Like every good piece of art, it had me thinking for many hours."
