"This is probably one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Honestly, if you wished Van Helsing was a better movie, this is the end result. Admittedly, Gretel ends up getting shafted way more than Hansel in this movie, but that doesn’t ruin the story. Just turn off your brain and enjoy the fireworks. "
"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) isn’t your childhood fairy tale. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, this action-packed horror fantasy movie reimagines the classic story with a twist. It stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular sibling duo, now all grown up and turned professional witch hunters. What follows is a visually intense ride with high-octane action sequences and dark, grisly humor.
The film's greatest strength lies in its stylistic blend of old-world fantasy with modern action tropes. The chemistry between Renner and Arterton brings a refreshing dynamic to the story, with each character fleshed out well beyond the traditional folklore. The movie doesn’t shy away from blood and gore, making it clear this isn’t a tale for the faint of heart.
However, the plot itself, while engaging, can sometimes feel a bit thin. The narrative relies heavily on special effects and intense fight scenes, sometimes at the expense of deeper storytelling. The villains, played by Famke Janssen as the grand witch Muriel, add a formidable presence but lack the depth to make them truly memorable.
Overall, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters delivers on its promise of a dark and twisted adventure. It's a film best enjoyed with the lights off and an expectation for pure, unadulterated fun rather than profound storytelling. For fans of supernatural action flicks with a penchant for the macabre, this one’s a thrilling ride.

"You don't see enough medieval chain guns, and certainly not enough turned loose on a brood of witches...UNLESS...you see this movie. It had ample gratuitous gore for gore's sake and it was funny in parts. I'd like to see a sequel, but I just don't think we will. Some things are just Too Awesome for the general square community."
