"I stuck it out through the whole movie, hoping it would get better. It didn't. I read quotes from reviews from movie magazines on the movie's Wikipedia page and there were several that were spot-on so I'm going to share them in a minute. First, I'll say my opinion in my own words. Kristen Dunst was very good, but I read that she took a year preparing for the role. Why? I don't think Tom Holland took a year to prepare for his multiple personality role in The Crowded Room, and THAT role was actually incredibly difficult. Whatever...
The movie felt pretentious, like the two sisters who wrote and directed the film were trying too hard to make it a cinematic art piece. Like I said, others phrased it so much better than me so I'll share them with you after this last point I want to make.
There was no "beginning" to the movie. The people and relationships weren't fleshed out. You never really understand some of the relationships. You are given hints in the VERY limited dialog but you're mostly left to guess at how people know each other and why there is tension between certain people. The reason she goes crazy seems odd. To go that far off the deepend for the reason she did made me think she must've already been mentally unstable prior to the catalyst. The movie started off depressing and went downhill from there. I'm only giving two stars for Kirsten's acting (even though it wasn't a great part), and some of the drug-induced psychedelic images and interesting forest cinematography.
Here are some quotes that resounded with me:
The Rotten Tomatoes website's critics' consensus reads: "Woodshock's [sic] engages visually, but its half-baked premise is as underwhelming as it is unsatisfying."
David Fear of Rolling Stone wrote, "Woodshock is both gorgeous and pretentious in equal measures, and it's hard to reconcile the fact that you don't get one without the other."
Read the comments of this review for a couple more critics' reviews. "
"The ending is the only reason it went up one star. Otherwise I found the movie incredibly boring, I had to pick it up three separate times before finally finishing it. This is the complete opposite of A24s other movie “a ghost story” where there is also not much dialogue, but we learn the message it was trying to send. In this one I felt like there was not purpose or end goal. Don’t waste your time."
