"Edward Rutherford does an excellent job of linking complex geographic, economic and social concepts, weaving an excellent story, linking these all together under "insert country, city etc". I had only ever ready New York by him, which was fascinating to read while living there. I picked up "China" as I was interested on his take on the Opium wars.

This novel didn't disappoint, narrated from both the British, as well as the Chinese, it helped show the good, bad and the ugly of not only the Opium wars, but who wields the real power in the opposing monarchies.

As with any novel that changes characters throughout the story, some were really interesting/relatable, while others (especially in the latter half) were entirely forgettable. This book is well worth the read."
"Great, captivating novel set around the first opium war. Three individual characters, all effected by the war and each on opposing sides. Hard to figure out who you want to succeed because they are so well written and you want to protect them all! "
