"Dangerous intrigue were my first thoughts. There is a dark magic at work in this book I came to love. I felt the ocean lure me and of course the danger of the capaill uisce (water horses). The fact that Sean had one foot on land and one in the water made me feel that way as well. I wanted to be born here in this fantasy island, not a tourist who didn't understand why the islanders couldn't leave. I just felt the pull of this place so much and felt close to Sean and Puck at that. It wasn't a choice for some to stay or go. They would be killed by the island or they wouldn't and it made the land unforgiving but wonderous.<br/><br/>The story was very atmospheric. Also the world building was quite nice. I saw the race, the blood on the sands, the white cliffs. I felt the tremble in the capaill uisce flanks, the grit of sand in my hair. The author had a way of drawing you in and making it hard to breath at times. Although the story was slow to start and was pretty much a big build up. That's the only trouble I had with it. The entirety of the book is a setup for the race.<br/><br/>Steve West, Fiona Hardingham were the audiobook narrators. I think they gave good debt to the story. I was suprised to find speculation that the island was or near Ireland being as how that's were the water horses originated. There are many different interpretations of these creatures but without a doubt enjoyed this the most.<br/><br/>Again I enjoyed the elusiveness of the island. As though the main lander's were another species. They to felt the magic of the island but didn't have the will to stay. The danger of the horses, the weather, and the draw of the ocean pulled me into this story and I didn't want to leave."
