Katherine Applegate
Now a #1 New York Times bestseller! A touching and lyrical tale about a remarkable sea otter, from Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate, author of Wishtree. Meet Odder, the Queen of Play: Nobody has her moves. She doesn’t just swim to the bottom, she dive-bombs.She doesn’t just somersault, she triple-doughnuts.She doesn’t just ride the waves, she makes them.Odder spends her days off the coast of central California, practicing her underwater acrobatics and spinning the quirky stories for which she’s known. She’s a fearless daredevil, curious to a fault. But when Odder comes face-to-face with a hungry great white shark, her life takes a dramatic turn, one that will challenge everything she believes about herself—and about the humans who hope to save her.Inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers, this poignant and humorous tale told in free verse examines bravery and healing through the eyes of one of nature’s most beloved and charming animals.

""Odder" by Katherine Applegate is a truly touching and beautiful free verse novel!!! Using stories based on real otters, Applegate wrote from not only the otter's perspective, but she wrote from the human's perspective too. It was fascinating to read a novel in free verse, I will admit this was the very first book I have read in free verse, and I positively loved it!!! The cover, map illustrations on the inside covers, the illustrations throughout the novel, and the wonderful glossary and author's note at the end of the novel were all completely amazing and stunning! I loved how Applegate also shared resources for individuals to keep investigating otters on their own! Overall, I think this book is perfect for any age, I will admit that some passages may not make sense to a young reader without some explanation, but I believe that is book is an excellent way to get children and adults alike interested in marine biology! Otters are such wonderful animals of the sea, and I love how this novel captured their majesticness and their curiosity!!!"
"this is an ADORABLE kids book, written in verse, about a cute topic that is also very important!! sea otters are an endangered species (there are only about 3,000 of them in the world), but they are vital to the ocean's ecosystem! odder tells the story of an adorable rescued otter, and now i want to go watch live cams of otters playing"
