Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always - always - guard your heart. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father's crown... and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.But there's no room for compassion in the Kejari. War for the House of Night brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home. And Raihn may understand her more than anyone - but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall, in a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love. The Serpent and the Wings of Night is the first book in a new series of heart-wrenching romance, dark magic, and bloodthirsty intrigue, perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash and A Court of Thorns and Roses.

"My expectations were a tad too high based on the high Goodreads ratings. While I enjoyed main characters well enough I never got invested in secondary characters. Not certain I will read the sequel. "

"If you like ACOTAR and From Blood and Ash, then here is your next read. I thoroughly enjoyed that there is very little miscommunication drama in this book. It is very well written and I’m obsessed with Raihn. I have already downloaded the second book and cannot wait to see where the story goes next! "
"If you are looking for Hunger Games, but with vampires; here's your book. But seriously, this story was so good, if you can imagine the Hunger Games being more emotional yet somehow less disturbing, this is it. Be warned though, you will be exploring several different forms of abuse and the realization of that abuse as told by the narrator. The enemies to lovers/forced proximity *chef's kiss and oh the banter! 8/10."
"Apparently I’m in my Romantasy era, so this book is 100% my jam. I just love the enemies to lovers sexual tension, the exciting action of the trials, the world building, and the twists!! I was so invested in this world and in the two main characters: Oraya, a strong FMC and Raihn, a new MMC to swoon over. If a vampires meets Hunger Games world is your vibe…I would definitely recommend! I will absolutely be returning for rereads. "
"Again, right after reading Fallen by C.N. Crawford I repeatedly got these two mixed up. Just like the last book, it felt to me like a low-budget film. Not much character development or world-building. Like I said before I have read a few self-published books that are still today one of my favorites and also not very well remarked upon. So there, now I have the authority to complain.

What irked me the most was that the protagonist read more like a fifteen-year-old and for someone who was soon to be taking over a kingdom, knew so very little about the land she would one day rule. So that also meant we as a reader knew nothing.

There were many God's and Goddesses also different types of Vampires. Still, I cannot tell you their differences or why one fought the other, or who served what God. This inability to connect with the world continued.

For example:
Of course the love interest is a ___ one of the rarest ___ and his friend wields fire but not the magic fire the real stuff and I've never seen that outside of a ____.

This all sounds like it's supposed to be shocking and special but it isn't when you don't know what the author is talking about. I just felt disconnected from everyone and everything. The friendships were nice to watch and the games seemed interesting but other than that everything was very generic."
"This successfully grabbed my attention when I had to figure out what to read after Fourth Wing/Iron Flame, and I'm very grateful because I was worried I was going to have a very long-term book hangover (for romantasy books, at least). Anyway, I adored this, and it had so many story aspects I loved (I will usually be on board for fantasy competition books, so this was perfect). My only complaint is that I wish we had seen some additional POVs to get more information about things, but I also understand why it wasn't done that way, so it's not a huge issue. I can't wait to read the other books in the series!"
"So boring, slow paced and a lot of unnecessary parts of this book. I ended up skimming so much because it wasn’t moving and Oraya was so dull. There’s not much character growth and it truly affected the story. Lots of world building that didn’t really add to the story either. This felt like a twilight and the hunger games had a baby and this is it. "

The Serpent and the Wings of Night is a high paced, action packed read. I loved a lot about this book from the get-go. Starting with Oraya, she is a badass that shows vulnerability without being obnoxious or un-relatable. Her journey of strength and trying to connect to her past is honest and sweet. Easily one of my favorite heroines. Vincent is such a complex character; I predicted him to be a mustache twirling evil villain by the end, but I was pleasantly surprised by that dual Father/King role playing out until his death (murder). Speaking of Raihn, he is a hunky hunky fella, he reminds me a lot of Cassian from ACOTAR. The romance between Raihn and Oraya is so well developed. I wouldn’t necessarily call it enemies to lovers - perhaps battling rivals to lovers. But the rest of the plot? Political tension and rivaling clans? Chefs kiss. Done wonderfully. The magic system is great too - simple but unique. The twist at the end - yes! Give me more unpredictable stuff and I will kiss you on the lips Carissa Broadbent (consensually).
I also loved the writing, how each new part introduced a little more about Vincent and Oraya through that omniscience narrator. I would have loved to know there was a glossary at the end of the book, since it took me around the 50% mark to realize what the heck Hiaj and Rishan vampires were and what house they belonged to, as well as what people thought of the House of Blood. Also Nyaxia’s story made the trials confusing at parts, but I caught up eventually. I still devoured this book in about 3 days, it was wonderfully written!
Can’t wait to find out what happens in Ashes and the Star Cursed King!"
