In misty, coastal Washington State, Isaac lives alone with his dog, grieving the recent death of his teenage son, Daniel. Next door, Lorrie, a working single mother, struggles with a heinous act committed by her own teenage son. Separated by only a silvery stretch of trees, the two parents are emotionally stranded, isolated by their great losses—until an unfamiliar sixteen-year-old girl shows up, bridges the gap, and changes everything. Evangeline’s arrival at first feels like a blessing, but she is also clearly hiding something. When Isaac, who has retreated into his Quaker faith, isn’t equipped to handle her alone, Lorrie forges her own relationship with the girl. Soon all three characters are forced to examine what really happened in their overlapping pasts, and what it all possibly means for a shared future. With a propulsive mystery at its core, What Comes After offers an unforgettable story of loss and anger, but also of kindness and hope, courage and forgiveness. It is a deeply moving account of strangers and friends not only helping each other forward after tragedy but inspiring a new kind of family.

"This book was hard to read. The writing was good and probably a four-star. But the premise just didn’t works for me."

"Pretty good book about a girl named Evangeline who ends up homeless at age 16 and pregnant. She ends up living with Isaac, who is the father of a boy named Daniel who was murdered by his friend and neighbor, Jonah. The relationship Isaac has with Jonah's mother, Lorrie is very complicated, and I don't feel that it was resolved well. The author tells the story well, but there are a couple of side stories that kind of don't have much to do with the plot of the main story. Isaac is also a Quaker, but I didn't see where that was very important either. The ending leaves me with too many unanswered questions."
"Yes! Totally worth it!"

"I believe if you are really paying attention there are many lessons to take away from each book you read. This one taught lessons of love, family that is not blood, and finally evil. How it’s not a person, place or thing but lives in all of us. How it’s born and bred right at our core and when not carefully managed bubbles over and runs rampant. I picked this book at random off a library shelf and it turned out to be one of the best books I’ve ever read. 10/10 recommend. "
