But instead of a lunatic, Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of childlike rules, who is employing a village of nine hundred people rescued from the workhouses of London. Katharine becomes torn between protecting her own livelihood and preserving the peculiar community she grows to care for deeply -- a conflict made more complicated by her developing feelings for her uncle's handsome apprentice. As the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear that not only is her uncle's world at stake, but also the state of England as Katharine knows it. With twists and turns at every corner, this extraordinary adventure will captivate readers with its thrills and romance.

"I admit, the first half just... Drags a bit, and the main character is not easy to like a - think a bitter Cinderella, but with none of the charm. If you manage to push through and look past that initial introduction, though, it suddenly gets pretty amazing. Yes, there is a lot of mystery and a definite supernatural, eerie draw that keeps you hooked and waiting with a kind of uneasy excitement for what will happen next. And yes, there is just enough romance to keep things interesting.
The real heart of the story are the characters, though, because they struggle with the mental challenges and quirks that still make a lot of the populace of TODAY uneasy, much less how horrific it must have been to suffer those challenges back in the late 1800s when the story takes place. So despite the rough start, this one will definitely be a reread some day."
"The red rising series by pierce brown. I first got it on audiobook, listened through twice, then got the entire series for Christmas and can’t put them down. I’ve read the first 2 1/2 books in the last 3 weeks. "
