This was my first taste of Octavia Butler's work, and it is incredible. She changed my life with her work. She is greatly missed, but lives on in her words she left behind."

The first-person perspective amplifies this effect. I've never really read anything like it. Octavia Butler is a fantastic writer and I would encourage you to read this if you're looking to learn more about the experiences of the black slaves in the 1800s. Warning though, it can be very intense at times."

alex_chock shared a tip "If you liked Kindred I highly recommend other books by Octavia Butler. Parable of the Sower, Dawn, or Wild Seed. Wild seed is the first book in the Patternmaster series and it's unlike anything I've read before, Patternmaster series is perhaps her best work in my opinion."

glaivemaiden shared a tip "I'm trying not to be hyperbolic, but when I say this is the best novel I've ever read, it doesn't feel like hyperbole. This novel is as timely now as it was when it was published, and it's required reading for anyone who balks at the idea of critical race theory being taught in schools. A novel should make you think long and hard about what the author is trying to tell you, and after a week, I'm still dissecting Kindred. When fiction comes as close to reality as this, that's mandatory."

But his cruelty leaves you torn because your action or lack of action changes everything, not only for you but the slaves on his plantation.."

This is a compelling story with an interesting time travel dynamic and realistically complicated characters. I loved the MC’s pragmatism."
