"This is a perfect mystery series for all age groups. I will say that you should keep a dictionary handy or your phone close because there are new words you will learn in each installment and this is coming from a very well read 26 year old. Myrtle's continued fascination with her parents' two professions, that of law and medicine, make her a nontraditional mid-19th century twelve year old. Her intelligence is encouraged by her father and governess but her boldness can sometimes be misconstrued as rudeness when she is on a case so she can occasionally be disciplined for her hunt for the truth. Using forensic means that are up-to-date for the time period, the Myrtle series teaches you a lot about botany, medicine, law practice, and how 19th century cases were able to be solved during the time period and each book somehow is better than the last. I've written the author to tell her how much I appreciate these books and got the nicest reply. Readalikes in my opinion are Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series and Jennifer Allison's Gilda Joyce series. Flavia de Luce is adult audience but there is nothing objectionable to kids except for language in the ones I have read."
