"usually you find out an author is racist from the names they give their poor cat, hearing a murder mystery's original title, or naming one of their two black characters 'shacklebolt'. most of the time you have a heads up from the context of how you heard about it, like 'mein kampf' or 'the turner diaries'.
tarzan completely blindsided me. in retrospect i was probably expecting something KINDA racist (because it's a 1912 book taking place in an african jungle), but not as bad as this.
we're talking 'main character is a white supremacist who regularly lynches black people years before jane ever shows up and blurts out her concept of racial heirarchies and how terrified she is of miscegenation'. we're talking 'birth of a nation'-style genocide endings as tarzan and his french buddies gleefully murder every black man they find and keep the women as trophies.
this book is F*cKed UP."
"The author draws you right into tthe story. You’re right there with Tarzan, sharing his adventures and life. Adventure, humour, heart jerking romance and even a bit of history, this has got it all. One of the best classics. A must read!!"
