The Newbery Honor Award Winner and New York Times bestseller Roller Girl is a heartwarming graphic novel about friendship and surviving junior high through the power of roller derby—perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier's Smile! For most of her twelve years, Astrid has done everything with her best friend Nicole. But after Astrid falls in love with roller derby and signs up for derby camp, Nicole decides to go to dance camp instead. And so begins the most difficult summer of Astrid's life as she struggles to keep up with the older girls at camp, hang on to the friend she feels slipping away, and cautiously embark on a new friendship. As the end of summer nears and her first roller derby bout (and junior high!) draws closer, Astrid realizes that maybe she is strong enough to handle the bout, a lost friendship, and middle school… in short, strong enough to be a roller girl. In this graphic novel debut that earned a Newbery Honor and five starred reviews, real-life derby girl Victoria Jamieson has created an inspiring coming-of-age story about friendship, perseverance, and girl power!

"These tween books are really hitting me lately! Once I got 3/4 of the way through I was pretty much crying until the end. Her friendships, seeing Astrid learn and grow, her opening up to her mom and the way her mom supported her. This is one of the best graphic novels I've read--I often feel you lose some of the deeper plots and development of a novel in graphic novels, but I feel this had that and the images really added to it. Everything just worked really well together."
"Astrid is being drug to another cultural enlightenment event by her mother with her best friend Nicole. Astrid thinks it is a carnival or some other type of boring event until they begin to watch the action. Her mother took her to a roller derby bout! Following the bout, Astrid is full of wonder and amazement. She loves the star jammer for the Rose City Rollers named Rainbow Bite and wants to skate just like her! After the bout, they go out to dinner and she finds an advertisement for a junior derby boot camp. She decides to sign up and is super excited to do it until her friend Nicole backs out. Nicole wants to do a ballet camp so Astrid, unbeknownst to her mother, goes to junior derby camp alone even though she was supposed to be carpooling with Nicole's mother. Astrid finds out that roller derby is much harder than it looks. She struggles to learn how to skate, block and perform the skills necessary to play roller derby. When she finds out that the Rosebuds, the junior roller derby team, will be doing a demo bout at the next home game for the Rose City Rollers she practices longer and harder so that she can jam for her team. Astrid is disappointed when things don't go her way, Nicole no longer wants to hang out with her and her one and only friend at junior derby bootcamp Zoey is now mad at her too! Can Astrid find her derby name, finally come clean to her mom and mend her bridges with Nicole and Zoey? A great introduction for young girls to the sport of roller derby and a great story! Highly recommend to fans of roller derby or anyone who loved the movie Whip It! staring Drew Barrymore and an awesome story about growing up and teenage angst!"
