"Well I was warned. The ending would ruin the story and mostly it has. This is not your conventional fantasy or dystopian in which I was totally and completely on board for. Romance was not even remotely a topic of conversation and to be honest is rare and I liked coming up with my own assumptions. The magical system, well what little there was, in the end was still a mystery. Plotholes, undeveloped side characters, and yet I enjoyed myself up until the grand reveal. Tears vision was a pipe dream. It what scenario can you ever make a better world that will not, eventually, turn out like the past? Maybe it was just demonstrating that with the past you will inevitably repeat it. But still the way Tear was choosing who got to cross made no since. Like even though someone isn't bad now they could become so later. Or have psychopath children.... who knows the possibilities are endless. Also how could Tearling be so totally separated from the world. This wasn't explained or either I missed it somewhere. Other lands could have ships or technology. Yet the story is a page turner and unique. I enjoyed the understanding between the queens. I enjoyed the guard and the little assassin. And none of it mattered in the end. The new povs were not as interesting so it made me resent having to read them. Though it was all about explaining the past. Also I absolutely loved the passage about books teaching us empathy by living others lives. Yet again in the end I felt abandoned and my curiosity unfulfilled. All the people I learned to love had become someone else. Quotes Always, we think we know what courage means. If I were called upon, we say, I would answer the call. I would not hesitate. Until the moment is upon us, and then we realize that the demands of true courage are very different from what we had envisioned, long ago on that bright morning we felt brave."
