Cambridge is sweltering, during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, formar police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet—Lost on the left, Found on the right—and the two never seem to balance.Surrounded by death, intrigue and misfortune, his own life haunted by a family tragendy, Jackson attempts to unravel three disparate case histories and begins to realize that in spite of apparent diversity, everything is connected…

"This is the first mystery novel that I have read that was setup with 3 different case histories from different time periods at the beginning of the book and then from there you met amazing characters (some delightful....some absolutely disgusting) from each of these histories and the one person that intertwines them together. I loved how it read.....it was fascinating to read a mystery this way....it was impossible to put down (let's just say I did lose a few hours of sleep because the need to get to the answers was so intense that I simply had to keep reading. This was my first Kate Atkinson novel and I will be looking forward to reading more from her."
"I'd like to thank my friend Pam for recommending this book. It took me a little while to get into it. I sometimes struggle with books that have different POV character chapters and I find myself wanting to skip quickly through the chapters of the characters I don't like as much. But the payoff in this book was worth it. I enjoyed way things wrapped up at the end and we learned details - I really like it when you get to see the real story. Looking forward to reading more Kate Atkinson."
