"Not a pleasure read. The views and actions of the characters WILL make you squirm. BUT, it is interesting as a look at the ideals of the times. Pamela is a very early novel and a zeitgeist of its time. The uncritical love and extreme social backlash is mirrored in our cultural reaction to Twilight. It was a polarizing book. For some idea of the arguments against it, follow reading this with the more palatable satires: Shamela, Joseph Andrews, and Anti-Pamela."
