"Turn of the Screw by Henry James 2/5 ⭐ Didn't really like the pandering and constant overstatement. Also for a horror story I didn't feel any urgency, edge of seat thrill or fear at all. Maybe cause of the time frame it was written in 1898, much different time obviously."

"I keep going back and forth on this one. For a short book, it was still way too long and repetitive. For a ghost story, it was not scary. Is it satire? Maybe, but if so, I am not sure that I get the joke. This one just left me scratching my head. I would rather read Wuthering Heights or Poe again."

"The narrator is awesome. The story is confusing and unclear. So much was left to suggestion and surmise that it was taking me out of the story to figure out what the governess was talking about half the time. Discussed it with my wife and neither of us fully understand what happened except that a crazy lady who may or may not be seeing ghosts, can do a lot of damage when left with two kids in her charge. The amount of awareness, cleverness and culpability she heaps on them is disturbing, whether the author meant for her to take to be trustworthy or not, I just didn't get the impression the kids were doing anything other than being kids. The book just didn't work for us. Maybe someone else will get it."
