The Favorite Sister

"I'm going to say from the beginning that The Favorite Sister is not going to be for everyone. It's set on a reality TV show, and there's a lot of pettiness & backstabbing happening. However this book is going to work for some people, and I'm one of them. I found this book to be so damn entertaining, and I loved it.<br/><br/>This is not a thriller. It's a drama with a mystery, and at its core, a character study of successful women who maybe didn't make the best choices to find their success. <br/><br/>The Favorite Sister gave me a lot of things to think about, and this was a very layered story to me. I'm not going to go into it to avoid spoilers, but I'm just going to say that, for example, it made me reflect on how we relate to other women in regards to success. I loved seeing the characters unravel, and the women I thought I knew at the beginning of the book were not the same ones at the end. You never really know anyone, and this book shows how easy it is to deceive. <br/><br/>There are so many intriguing topics in this book - success, class, race, body positivity, fame, friendship, secrets, etc. Jessica Knoll did a great job at trying to cover different aspects of life as a modern woman. The book is quite self-aware, and I was surprised by multiple insightful passages in the book (since it's a book about a reality show). I had a lot of fun with this book. <br/><br/>I would recommend this book for fans of books like The Last Mrs. Parrish, Lie to Me, The Wife Between Us, and The Perfect Mother. "I swear, absolutely nothing happened in the first half of the book. I was so bored I didn’t know that I’d be able to see it through. It did eventually pick up and got quite interesting near the end. But this book was way too ******* long for now uneventful it was throughout most of it."

I've been super excited to see that it's been optioned for a movie, I can't wait to see it. So obviously, I was super excited to get a copy of Favorite Sister.<br/><br/>I'm not a big reality TV watcher, except for Flipping Out and years ago, I watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians, when they were a lot funnier and a lot more normal (hard to believe, right?). But I read Us Weekly and People while I'm floating in the pool, so I feel like I'm pretty up to date on the Real Housewives, without ever watching any of them.<br/><br/>Let's just say reading this book didn't inspire me to become a regular viewer. These women are honestly repulsive. You usually have at least one character to root for, but in this group, there wasn't one person that was innocent. Or even nice. Or ethical. Completely unrootable.<br/><br/>Brett is an old girl on Goal Diggers, but somehow her sister, Kelly has just become part of the regular cast, along with her teenaged daughter. That could cause enough drama, but Brett, the chubby lesbian and Stephanie, the gorgeous erotic author are clearly on the outs. What could these former roommates have against each other? I could see where I was being led, but the shocking twist didn't shock me too much, as I felt like whoever was sleeping with whoever, they all deserved each other.<br/><br/>It's probably a very accurate look at reality television, but it's a very sad look at the state of our relationships as a society. Some women would lie, cheat, betray in every way just to stay on television.<br/><br/>I read it all but it left me depressed, however, I've read a lot of other reviewers that loved it. <br/>"
