Hallmarks of this genre are atmosphere & symbolism so a gothic novel can take place most anywhere there can be supernatural threats but there can also be more mundane ones such as societal issues as well as sexual issues & gender issues some of the biggest focuses are the psychology of the protagonist and those around them as well as fear of the unknown,the past comming back to haunt the present, entrampment,medical issues and medicine itself, sleep & dreams, echoes, silence, Solitude &darkness
