"This movie is, for sure, in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. That's saying quite a lot with the amount of movies in the world. I knew of Leslie Cheung initially through his music and then became interested in his acting career. This was the first movie I had seen that included him, and I must say I was blown away. I think the correct way to describe the movie is "art". Cheung does an amazing job of portraying the fluidity of gender between male and female during his struggles as Douzi. Shitou and Douzi's relationship in the film is heartbreaking but done well. I won't deny it, however, I saw this film with English subtitles and Chinese audio. I got lost a bit in the second half of the film occasionally, but it did not waver my opinion on this film!"
"Most amazing film I have ever seen. My words are honestly not good enough to describe this movie. This realistic cinema piece poignantly portrays a desperately opera-crazed man whose fate works against him despite his natural talent and beauty. Leslie Cheung's acting brewed the perfect blend of the realm between opera and reality; male and female; illusion and truth. The film's subtle sorrow will still hold its effects long after you fniish the film. This is absolutely a classic film. "
