"+ This is a wonderful family drama, and though its take on the genius trope is pretty straightforward, what I really liked is how it focused on the theme of uncertainty. In movies featuring the genius trope, the person who is on his or her side usually has an air of moral superiority, but in this movie that character (played by Chris Evans) is as much in the dark as everyone else. He does his best to follow his heart and do what is right, but he is constantly racked with self-doubt, and it is this element coupled with the relationship he has with his genius eight-years-old niece (played by McKenna Grace) that carries the movie through. If not for resting on the cliches that comes with this type of story it might have reached the heights of movies like Good Will Hunting. Still this movie was surprisingly touching and had many effective performances to make it shine.
- There are certain cliches and tropes that the movie rests too heavily on without adding anything new. It's not debilitating to the quality of the he overall movie, but it does keep it from being a deeper character study.
Overall: A powerful drama with strong performances, and great chemistry between McKenna Grace and Chris Evans. The story of these two characters is deeply touching. Though it can be a bit cliche at times.
NOTE: Though I speak of MCU movies being assembly line entertainment there is no denying that they also give actors such as Chris Evans a new lease on life as a serious dramatic actor. Without his role as Captain America, he might have gone the goofy route of Ryan Reynolds, but in this movie he shows his genuine talent for serious dramatic roles. He brings a perfect balance of seriousness and levity to this character and is a huge reason for why this movie works. This movie is an example for why we need a healthy homeostasis of indie movies and blockbuster hits. They truly can work for one another."
