New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg is on assignment covering the Cambodian Civil War, with the help of local interpreter Dith Pran and American photojournalist Al Rockoff. When the U.S. Army pulls out amid escalating violence, Schanberg makes exit arrangements for Pran and his family. Pran, however, tells Schanberg he intends to stay in Cambodia to help cover the unfolding story — a decision he may regret as the Khmer Rouge rebels move in.

"An extremely well made and harrowing film highlighting a horrific event in Cambodia involving the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and the genocide committed by them, along with a powerful tale of the survival of Dith Pran. Fantastic direction, score, cinematography (well deserved Oscar win) and performances (Sam Waterston and Haing S. Ngor MVP). I can’t imagine what it must have been like for the late Haing S. Ngor to play the role of Dith Pran, especially since both Ngor and Pran were survivors of the Cambodian genocide and their parallels added a heartbreaking layer to his performance (that being said, an incredibly well deserved win for him). Needs to be watched by all. Highly recommended."
