i adore this novel. not only does it explore religious trauma in the midst of queer identity, but it delves into the panic behind the AIDS crisis and the hysteria of Y2K. the central boy is flawed, yet relatable, giving the slowly-unveiled conflict that much more of an impact. his monster—and his wish to take on the tribulations of adulthood—is truly a sight to behold, a patchwork amalgamation of repeated imagery and broken memories. it leaves you thinking… maybe we will be okay.

larocca’s work is odd. odd in the way that, while you’re reading, you can’t fathom it—it tugs at the strings of reality in such a way as to make surrealist songs, ones that echo with memories lost. in a way, their works are a liminal space; the comfort of a chatroom at the beginning of the internet, of suburbia, of family, all hazy and lacking definition. simply, his work is beautifully chaotic, dreamlike and yet possessing the sharpness of reality. i adore it.
