Interesting read especially considering when it was written. It is a bit long and tedious though, particularly when Verne goes into overly lengthy detailed descriptions of different flora and fauna observed. I guess that’s what he was going for though considering the protagonist is a naturalist.

The first half of this book was tough to read. It was just SO sad. I can’t remember ever feeling so emotional from reading a book before! For that experience alone it was amazing. I wasn’t crazy about the direction it went in the end though. I wouldn’t say it has a happy ending but I think the main character of this story ended up with a happier ending than he deserved… especially compared to some of Silvera’s other stories where those great characters just never could catch a break.

I appreciate the final chapter added in, but it reversed course so fast in a different direction than the rest of the story that it almost felt like it didn’t fit. I think not reading the last chapter makes for a more powerful (but depressing) story but if you’re in need of a bit of a mood life by the time you get there (and you will be) then the new ending is a great addition.
