"3.75. I enjoyed the mystery of Inez uncovering the truth about her parents in Egypt, and her meeting with her estranged relative and his right-hand man was intriguing. At first, Inez came across as intelligent, stubborn, and resourceful, but by the end, her impulsiveness got frustrating, as it put her and others at risk. Whit, the perceptive and flirty former soldier, was a strong character, though I wanted more insight into his troubled family background. I wasn’t sold on the romance between him and Inez—it felt more like a mutual attraction than a deep connection since they barely knew each other. The shady characters added complexity, making it hard to figure out who was guilty, which I liked. However, the pacing felt off at times, dragging in certain sections. I appreciated the shady characters, making it hard to tell who was guilty. However, the pacing felt off, with some slow, dragging moments. Overall, the mystery and setting kept me engaged. If you enjoy books about adventure, history, British occupation in Egypt, and mystery, you’ll probably like this one."

"What I didn’t realize is that this was the start of a series. The second book comes out in November of this year. However apart from that, I think this book was great. This book is considered magical, and involving both a quest and a puzzle. The story as a whole follows Inez as she tries to find out just what happened to her parents in Egypt. Here she find out that everything that she has been told is potentially a lie and the people she has put her trust in might really be who she should worried about. I really enjoyed this story! I loved the aspect of Egyptian storytelling/ history and the inclusion of magic to carry an otherwise treasure-hunters tale."

"I have a fascination with Egypt and its many wonders, so I had no doubt I would enjoy the adventure. I did not expect to fall in love with the book though. I absolutely loved all the characters, even the antagonist. Inez is bold, which sometimes made me cringe but it only made me like her more. I recommend this book if you want adventure, romance, suspense and experience true heartbreak. Be Aware. "

"(3.5 stars, rounded up) For May I’m trying to read all the random books I purchased and left unread instead of reading what I actually want to read, and this was an underwhelming start to my goal. It took me way too long to finish. The main reason was the pacing: this was super slow and tedious to get through. I definitely was expecting more tomb raiding and traps than intrigue and focus on the characters. But the beginning chapters had some promise for a good adventure story. Also some of the reveals and twists were pretty exciting, but they were far and few between. If you love good romantic banter, you will love this: there is just so much banter between Inez and the love interest, Whit. In general, Whit was my least favorite kind of love interest: overwhelming handsome and snarky. But the romance was pretty good, and there were some cute moments. (Also, enemies to lovers!) And the illustrations and drawings were a cute little bonus, and helped us not only visualize the story but also explore Inez’s character. Also illustrations aren’t a thing we see too often in YA books. I think most of my problems with this book came from the idea that historical fiction and fantasy can both be hit or miss genres for me, and it was… a miss with both genres. I may still read the sequel to this though (especially because the cover for it is absolutely stunning.) Most likely, people looking for action won’t like this book, but fans of more immersive and slower paced stories will like this one. "
