"Meet Me In St. Louis is a charming family musical starring Judy Garland. Its reputation as one of the great classic film musicals is not over-hyped. It's a beautiful film with fantastic numbers. The most enduring of these, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, remains a part of shared American culture. In the context of the film, it's an extremely melancholy scene. The Trolley Song, of course, has also enjoyed a long life. The cast is phenomenal, including, of course, Garland, but also Lucille Bremer as Rose Smith, Garland's Esther's sister. Margaret O'Brien also shines as youngest sister, Tootie. The director, Vincente Minelli, makes some bold choices for a 1940's family film that give some scenes an unreal feeling. This film might not appeal to people who don't care for musicals from this era, and it might not appeal to people who don't like Hollywood happy endings. For the rest of us, though, this is a delightful film, even when Garland's little sisters try to murder a trolleyful of strangers (?)."
