"4.25⭐️ I put off watching this movie for way too long. Yes it has the form of a traditional biopic plus we all know what occurred at the 1936 Nazi led Berlin Olympic Games, well I hope so anyway. But this film still manages to build nail biting tension of Jesse Owens’ historic wins right in the face of Hitler and the entire world.
What I did not know was that the US threatened to boycott the games or that Owens’ was pressured not to attend by the NAACP no less. Both for reasons of not supporting Nazism and its eugenic ideology. Given segregation, the Jim Crow laws and treatment of Black Americans within the US, the irony and that tension is not lost in this film.
And yet this is NOT a trauma movie. It’s triumphant of course and ultimately uplifting. But we are rightfully left with the melancholy of that same irony.
With filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl shown documenting the games, the resulting humiliation of Hitler and the debunking of his aryian master race theory, the footage was able to be shown to the world and is still, thankfully, available to see.
If anyone has any currently streaming doc recs on Owens and the games please drop them here! "
