A fan of Cecily for years from SNL, I went into this blind not knowing what it was about. It is essentially a memoir of grief that began with losing her cousin Owen to cancer in 2020 right before COVID hit, then SNL shutting down & her leaving NYC to go to the country to try to remain safer from COVID & the fears that enveloped her & the memories that fear brought up of other times in her life of feeling scared & powerless. Turns out she’s a very anxious person and a very relatable person who struggles with feeling too needy in friendships & relationships. This book began as just quick journal entries that she wrote that are included here not because they are great writing but serve to ground the work with what she was truly feeling at the height of the pandemic when she wondered if she’d ever go back to her own home in the city again or back to work again at SNL. When an SNL staffer dies of COVID it hits her very hard & more grief ensues. At the heart of this book is the love of her family & how much she misses them during COVID & the love she has for her cousin Owen and all he taught her & continues to teach her. This is not a funny book but has funny & uplifting moments & I very much appreciated Cecily’s vulnerability which helped me see that grief touches everyone. Her anxiety, self doubt and self esteem issues are universal whether you are on tv or not. This short book had a lot of wisdom but beware: it will take you back to the scary days of when COVID began."
