Larry McMurtry
The first prequel in Larry McMurtry’s beloved Lonesome Dove series features the early adventures of Texas Rangers Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call, two of the most memorable heroes in contemporary fiction. As young Texas Rangers, Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call ("Gus" and "Call" for short) have much to learn about survival in a land fraught with perils: not only the blazing heat and raging tornadoes, roiling rivers and merciless Indians, but also the deadly whims of soldiers. On their first expeditions—led by incompetent officers and accompanied by the robust, dauntless whore known as the Great Western—they will face death at the hands of the cunning Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump and the silent Apache Gomez. They will be astonished by the Mexican army. And Gus will meet the love of his life.

"Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurtry
4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's been so long since I read a book that made me take breaks because of the brutality but this is a true Western saga so I shouldn't have been surprised.
My only qualms were that the writing is oversimplified and there is nothing to write home about, but when I thought of it being told from the perspective of uneducated boys and men it helped some. And really everyone in this till the end is abysmal in the brains department and it leaves these boys on a deadly adventure with real felt consequences.
Also, the instant love that Gus experiences is not my favorite but I guess it just hits some people that way. I hope there is more depth to that relationship moving forward.
This was a real fight on all sides and while there is some POV from multiple people including our bad guys it really showed the multifaceted nature of people in difficult situations.
I'm excited to continue my read of the series and so far I'm happy I chose to read this series by year represented chronologically. "
"After reading Lonesome Dove I was happy to hear about the prequel’s. I can’t get enough of these characters. it’s great to get the backstory of how they became who they are in Lonesome Dove. "

"My favorite from the series. Gus and Call are young men just starting out as rangers. The superb character building is partly why these novels are so great."
