"This was a really brave and honest memoir, the most recent of many personal brave steps by Elliot Page. He goes back and forth through time, illuminating different ideas, struggles, and joys from many perspectives. It is truly HIS story, as he successfully makes it clear he speaks only for his own experience. Many people would like a concise narrative for all trans experiences, and Elliot does not give the reader that, instead giving the reader the beautiful gift of acknowledging that there is no universal experience and also exercising our empathy and compassion in his journey to overcome the hurdles to step forward confidently as himself. "This memoir is beautifully written and describes in heartbreaking detail Elliot’s life and the journey he was on to embracing his queerness. As far as memoirs go, this was great. Definitely recommend reading this as an audiobook; I would have been able to consume so much more had I read it that way. "
"Read this one just because I liked “her” when she was an up and coming actress. Wanted to learn a little as to where and why she felt her identity needed to change. All though I felt “his” story, I didn’t get the idea or feeling or the why… but possibly that’s just because we all are who we feel we are. And the next person really doesn’t know and should never judge. Regardless of opinions, purpose, religion, feelings, human is human and that’s what each of us are. I don’t understand the feeling/need to change ones self but than I have never had the desire. So to each their own. I just thought maybe there was some kind of clarity I might find in the book along his journey. The book was well written though of his life journey. "
"I am so grateful this memoir exists. Elliot is smart, funny, and an incredible writer, his words resonating with every Trans person who has been through the early stages of transition and denied themselves as trans bc of societal pressure. This book is another example of how the entertainment industry destroys child stars. It’s not okay. We do need to be more like Elliot and hold space for trans people of color! He is awesome"
