“Sequels are notoriously tricky. Even the characters in The Sequel acknowledge it. “They’re never as good as the first book, are they?”... Well, this one is. By shifting the focus to Anna, Korelitz gives the novel what many sequels lack: a sense of newness. While the story grows more intricate, she remains in control. Her plot ― ha! ― is propulsive, her prose precise.”―The New York TimesAfter the “insanely readable” (Stephen King) and “perfectly told” (Malcolm Gladwell) New York Times bestseller The Plot comes Jean Hanff Korelitz’s equally captivating new novel: The Sequel.Anna Williams-Bonner has taken care of business. That is to say, she’s taken care of her husband, bestselling novelist Jacob Finch Bonner, and laid to rest those anonymous accusations of plagiarism that so tormented him. Now she is living the contented life of a literary widow, enjoying her husband’s royalty checks in perpetuity, but for the second time in her life, a work of fiction intercedes, and this time it’s her own debut novel, The Afterword. After all, how hard can it really be to write a universally lauded bestseller? But when Anna publishes her book and indulges in her own literary acclaim, she begins to receive excerpts of a novel she never expected to see again, a novel that should no longer exist. That it does means something has gone very wrong, and someone out there knows far too much: about her late brother, her late husband, and just possibly... Anna, herself. What does this person want and what are they prepared to do? She has come too far, and worked too hard, to lose what she values most: the sole and uncontested right to her own story. And she is, by any standard, a master storyteller. With her signature wit and sardonic humor, Jean Hanff Korelitz gives readers an antihero to root for while illuminating and satirizing the world of publishing in this deliciously fun and suspenseful read.

"A sequel that is even better than its predecessor.
Anna Williams-Bonner announced she was going to write a book of her own while touring for her late husband's book, but didn't really mean it. She surprised herself by doing that very thing. Before she knows it, she is on a book tour of her own.
A request for an autograph to a name from her past has Anna wondering what someone knows. She will do anything to keep the past where it belongs.
The Sequel had unexpected twists and turns. There were several nail-biting scenes where you fear Anna may get what's coming to her.
Anna is the kind of MC you can't get enough of. She may be a psychopath, but she doesn't hurt anyone who hasn't hurt her first. She plans with precision and follows through with focus. She knows what people expect from her and plays that role.
The glimpse into the world of authors is eye-opening. After reading The Plot, I felt like I needed to be writing the books floating around in my head. The Sequel showed the battle getting published really is.
I definitely recommend The Sequel to anyone who enjoys reading about the world of authors and publishing, and to anyone who likes reading about psychopaths and how they think.

"The Sequel by Jean Hanff Korelitz picks up with Anna Williams Bonner, the widow of Jake Bonner from *The Plot*. Now an author herself, Anna’s debut novel gains significant attention. However, things take a dark and thrilling turn as she navigates her new literary fame, delving into themes of ambition, obsession, and moral ambiguity.
I loved this novel, it was a wild ride from start to finish. Anna’s escalating madness was gripping, and her unpredictable actions kept me hooked. The book had all the suspense and tension I hoped for after *The Plot*. I truly hope the series continues with more stories as thrilling as this one!"
"Fun read. Clever, as was the first novel, with a unique perspective from a character with malignant narcissism. As far as the story line, first suspend your disbelief that a person with a changed identity would publish a book and go on public tours around the country. Unfortunately, the author gratuitously characterized one of the villains as a member of a political party, then labeled the citizens living in the villain’s state with a slur. Which political party, or which state, matters not. We read thrillers to escape. In our deeply polarized country, cheap shots subtract rather than add to the author’s fan base, and they don’t sell more books."
