INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA furious, queer debut novel about embracing the monster within and unleashing its power against your oppressors."A long, sustained scream to the various strains of anti-transgender legislation multiplying around the world like, well, a virus." —The New York Times Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with. But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret: the cult’s bioweapon is mutating him into a monster deadly enough to wipe humanity from the earth once and for all. Still, Nick offers Benji shelter among his ragtag group of queer teens, as long as Benji can control the monster and use its power to defend the ALC. Eager to belong, Benji accepts Nick’s terms…until he discovers the ALC’s mysterious leader has a hidden agenda, and more than a few secrets of his own. "When it comes to transmasc transgender representation, I’m often forced to read about characters half my age. Most of the time this is the most irritating endeavor because they have so little in common with me (already transitioned in their teens, supportive parents, making dumb teenage decisions) or the writing is just.. bad. Boring.
So I was actually surprised and grateful to find a book that is not only interesting, but well-written. The exploitation of children by adults. The messiness and body horror of puberty. For trans people, going through that can feel like the end of the world. And here that feeling is literal.
Benji is not stupid. Benji tries his best to survive his horrible situation. He finds community and tries his best. And the representation is diverse. "
"An amazing sapphic and gothic novel that shows what happens when someone bites back. Despite other peoples views and opinions, Benji stays true to himself. So much pain and anguish, yet he still has the strength to show his true self in the midst of chaos. Your gender isn’t something to be ashamed of. You are who you are, and this book embodies that. Even if we look or feel like monsters, we’re all human. No matter what we look like, how we talk or walk, how we act, we are human. 10/10 read."
"Dystopian, sci-fi, horror. Trans kid escapes a religious cult and finds a queer youth group barely surviving the apocalypse that his family started. Slowly mutating into a demonic creature. MLM representation, trans representation, autistic main character. Trigger warnings (SUPER MAJOR) gore, religious trauma, abusive romantic relationship (moderate) deadnaming, dysphoria, death of parent. Difficulty level 2.5/5. 4.25⭐️"
"Okay, I can NEVER talk about this book enough. Since the first chapter, this has been my all time FAVOURITE book! I can never not be obsessed. I never buy books, but while I read it from the library, I spent what little money I had on it so fast! The characters, the plot, the MONSTERS, and the twists!! I would give ANYTHING to read this for the first time again. Theres cults, religious trauma, and it's basically my dream book. As much hype as this book gets, nothing can ever give it as much justice as it deserves. Anybody have any books similar to this that I can read? :)"
"Oh my god. I didn’t think this book could possibly be as good as the hype it was getting on TikTok but I was WRONG. I loved it from start to finish. Can’t wait for the author’s next release. "
