From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere comes a captivating thriller about a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism, which threatens to annihilate human life. Five prominent biophysicists have warned the United States government that sterilization procedures for returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. Two years later, a probe satellite falls to the earth and lands in a desolate region of northeastern Arizona. Nearby, in the town of Piedmont, bodies lie heaped and flung across the ground, faces locked in frozen surprise. What could cause such shock and fear? The terror has begun, and there is no telling where it will end.

"Are you a former NIH study section member that misses reading bad grant proposals? You might like this book. Take a report that's scientifically inaccurate but simultaneously spends 70% of the book on a bad background and methods section, add an ending that makes the whole story meaningless, and you have this classic scifi novel! How fun"
"Overly dry technical manual that uses a readers ignorance against them. Very little actual character development and a deus ex machina which truly rendered the entire threat meaningless. I hardly understand the praise of this novel as a "technothriller" as it lacks even basic understanding of technology and does woefully little to thrill. "
"One of the best books I have personally read, but it is not for everybody. It is almost like reading a case file or incident report with commentary from the people who were there. Some will find it boring. If you can make it through this one, the sequel is more 'active', so to speak. "
"Exciting "
