Topic: Books

I moved to a new area but my library hardly has any audio books, which is odd considering I’m in a large city. It should be a no brainer to have diverse reading formats. I put in for requests but was turned down because the library doesn’t purchase anything over a year old… what?? I’m sure the excuse is money related but I still don’t get it. The ones I’m after are pretty popular so you would think they would have incentive. Any ideas what I can do instead and why they might have this rule?

Elizabeth Gelhausen You could perhaps use your library card in the app hoopla or Libby. I think many libraries have gone to using those instead of buying more audiobooks

^^^ Oh I’m sorry, I thought I mentioned it was Libby that they weren’t being very helpful with. But your comment made me realize that I have been using the term “audiobook” and they might have not understood or got confused when I was actually asking for ebooks…? Maybe there’s a different way of going about getting those onto Libby..

Elizabeth Gelhausen @SCB oh yeah, I find that Libby is harder to get the books you are looking for. My library does hoopla too which often has the ebooks that I’m looking for instead of Libby.

^^^ @elizabeth_gelhausen Oh okay! I will definitely check that out instead. Thanks!

Barbara Jenkins Yes, Libby, if you can use it.

BeccaDooley After reading the other comments, if you go to the overdrive website and search for something, if they don’t have it, you can see options to suggest below. I’d guess that they do most of their recommendations through that. Did any of that make sense?

^^^ Yes, that makes sense. I had gone back and asked my library for clarification but they said they were really new to Libby because they were moving away from Overdrive… I’m new to the whole thing myself so it’s all very confusing. I thought the two programs were essentially the same thing? I will give it a go though because it’s really the last option since they don’t support Hoopla at all.
