For those interested in the "science" behind F.T.L. travel in sci-fi. What is the best/your favorite method? Warp like Star Trek? Hyperspace like Star Wars or Stargate? Wormholes like Stargate or Babylon 5? Any method. Any medium. Any franchise. Why do you prefer it?

Michael Prentice Well, all FTL is rather far fetched. 😁😉 Though I do like hyperspace from "Star Wars", visually speaking. Having said that, I also kind of like ludicrous speed in "Spaceballs". It's very plaid.

David Rachau As long as there is some in-universe explanation for it, I can suspend my disbelief. When they add some kind of drawback, or risk to it, I like it even more. Otherwise, I don't care what style it is.

Road Master What is your favorite example of ftl AND drawback?

David Rachau It's called The Last Horizon by Will Wight. The main protagonist is a wizard, and magic is a huge part of the world. Three books so far, not sure how many there will be, but my guess is 6 or 7 if the naming convention continues. His last series had 12 books, but he's also done trilogies, so who knows?

Drip I dunno what F.T.L. means and I ain’t never watched Stars Wars, but I like to concept of hyper speed space jets (and just space jets in general, pretty sure you can tell by now, lul)

Road Master F.T.L. = Faster Than Light. It's a general term. Often used to denote any method of interstellar travel that happens within a reasonable time frame. Generation ships and cryoships would not apply. In most cases, hyperdrive/space travel doesn't actually travel faster than light. It's more of a lightspeed bypass. It is typically extradimensional. Star Wars has hyperspace lanes. I'm pretty sure you can travel through hyperspace without using the lanes. But it's extremely dangerous and unpredictable. I believe they are, in some way, tied to The Force. But I don't know how.

Drip Uhhhh 😀 …like space jets that just go like really really unrealistically fast. I’m pretty dumb so I haven’t gotten into all the fancy sci fi terminologies like you have 😆

James Neumann Christopher Paolini's ftl method is like submarines. The have to "breach" back into normal space to dispel heat. I'm a big fan of the idea and it's really unique

Road Master Does it give any explanation for how that works?
