Topic: Batman Beyond
Okay, so when did the “old main character becomes old mentor to new character trope” become so despised? I freaking love that trope and I thought other people did too. “Batman Beyond,” “Creed,” “Legend of Korra,” “Logan,” all of these popular things have that trope and they’re all cool. I like seeing old characters I love passing on their knowledge to a new generation; I think it’s interesting and fun. I don’t get why people hate it now and I really don’t wanna see it die.

Andrea Thompson Probably cuz a lot of them end up sidelined and/or killed.

Connor Veenstra But doesn’t being the mentor kind of automatically sideline them? Not always, of course, but in stuff like Batman Beyond or Korra the mentors are secondary or tertiary characters.

Brandon Reed It's also not realistic for the old grizzled guy with osteoporosis who walks with a cane now to be the action star anymore.

Brandon Reed I think it's hated because some very large legacy franchises like Star Wars did it so poorly.

Jenny Brown If done improperly it can turn out agesist not helped when so many people write in a young edgy f**k you old man and society type young protagonist instead of someone who is willing to acknowledge there flaws and handicaps and is willing to listen to someone who has been there before themselves not helped by advertisements like here is a all new blank for the new generation and they make all the old characters deskbond housewives or in a postion that is lower than when they started or are killed off just to give the new hero motivation or made evil just for a symbolic battle of old vs new
