Topic: We, Yevgeny Zamyatin

Has anyone possibly read this book? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Supposedly, 1984 (by George Orwell) was inspired by this book. I'm currently reading 1984, and it definitely feels like there's missing pieces. I'm wondering if this book, We, has what 1984 is lacking.

CaitVD Yes, I’ve read it and it’s clear George Orwell took a lot from this book. That’s not to say it was as though he made 1984 as sort of a We fan fiction, but it is obvious. I wouldn’t say We is an exceptionally amazing or complete book, either. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts if you choose to read We soon after you finish 1984. I read We a couple decades after reading 1984 so my memory is not as fresh on 1984, I’m sure you will see a lot more similarities! (In case you have an iOS device, We is in their free classics collection.)

Mel Awesome sauce. Yeah, I definitely want to start reading We to sort of compare, i guess you could say. I feel like George plagiarized in a way (the sort of infrastructure of 1984 isn't George's original thought. He takes a lot of it from We, I feel). I figured We might not be an AMAZING book, but it definitely does intrigue me (especially it being banned in Russia when he wrote it). Thanks for your comment!

CaitVD Oh yeah, We is very heavily critical of the Soviet Union and it isn’t very veiled, there was no hope for it to not be banned! Happy reading and analyzing!

Reagan I’ve read 1984 and a few other dystopian classics. I haven’t read We yet, but I’ve heard good things.
