"I found this documentary absolutely absorbing and Navalny himself to be magnetic and charismatic. The whole thing just makes you feel a way. There must be a word for the chest tightening anxiety as certain events you already know to have happened and to be true unfold, hoping for the fairy tale ending, for wrong to be righted, to finally find the bottom of the depth of this evil. The documentary does excellent work to voice the words and make human the news stories and bits of text that flash by."
"I’ve been trying to write a review for this one for a while, and I finally realized that I can’t. It’s too emotionally difficult.I’ve been following Alexei for years and there wasn’t anything in this movie that I didn’t know. The story itself I followed in horror when it was unfolding in real time. Yet, I cried my eyes out watching this doc. It is very well put together for an 1.5 hour movie. I am happy it won the Oscar. At the same time as I watched it it never escaped me that we are seeing a man who’s currently serving 20 years in maximum security ( Russian) prison. Mostly in solitary confinement. There is a court hearing about every 3-6 month for one reason or another. Every time instead of defending himself he speaks out against Putin and his horrific war in Ukraine. People like Navalniy come once in a generation. He is Nelson Mandela of our time. Please watch the movie.
EDIT: Alexei died on February 16, 2024.
