"I LOVE this series. It isn't perfect by any means but it is whimsical and fun. I don't want to give too much away but if you want to just get swept away by something reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland I think it is worth reading. The mystery aspect does feel like it wasn't planned prior to the book being written but instead like Garber was questioning and discovering the story as they wrote. I think it works in Caraval and is the reason I love this book so much"
"“Caraval” has all the promise of a magical, bright, and spectacular plot, however, it falls short. The “game”, if you can even call it that, was not intriguing, was not imaginative, and was not rewarding to get to the end with the main character. By the end of the book, nothing made sense. The romance felt awkward and forced, and I have no desire to read the sequel. I expected to get swept away into “Caraval”, but instead found myself grimacing at the character choices and feeling confusion about the game. I felt this book could have simply been better. 2.5/5"
