"It took a few chapters to get into this book. I felt like I was being sent into a new world with information I didn’t quite understand. I did not grasp all of it for a little bit, but the more I read the less confusing it became. Overall, I did enjoy the story. There’s action and adventure, strong relationships between the characters, and some light romance. I am starting the second book immediately. "
"The dynamics of the romance is intriguing and intermingled with passion and hatred. The last 100 pages were beautiful. However, I wished the author had structured the plot so that things went smoothly and quickly. Most of the book was mundane and lack much noticeable purpose. Still, the world building and characterization was great. It seems like the first book was a long introduction to the main parts in the second book."
"Dnf early, like chapter 4 early

So this might make me a complete and utter ass hat but oh well. For reference and such, this is my second book by Mary E. Pearson. There is no way to fully grasp the reasons I quit on these books so early but I just get turned off by one thing or another. I mean turned off so completely and fast it makes my head spin. Honestly I didn't even know she was the same writer of Kiss of Deception until I tried to look up a map for the audiobook. I dnf that one by the way too if it wasn't obvious.

The writing style is musical and lilting. But the main characters are portentous as hell. You are thrown into what seems like the middle of a story and then the rest of the chapters you were placed in Kazi's head while she patted herself on the back repeatedly. I don't like being told over and over again like I'm daft. Tell me their story and I'll judge for myself of their character.

The repetition of "I'm a badass, I am special" was too much for me. I rarely give up so early but sometimes something happens in the story that is so of kilter that I can't overcome it and I am aware that it is childish with a side of stubborn. So although fantasy is my favorite genre, the world and the characters should still possess an inkling of realism."
