ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME • BOOKER PRIZE NOMINEE • “A taut and darkly funny contemporary noir that moves at lightning speed, it’s the wittiest and most fun murder party you’ve ever been invited to.” —MARIE CLAIRE Korede’s sister Ayoola is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead, stabbed through the heart with Ayoola’s knife. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood (bleach, bleach, and more bleach), the best way to move a body (wrap it in sheets like a mummy), and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she’s exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola’s phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she’s willing to go to protect her.

""I bet you didn't know that bleach masks the smell of blood."

My Sister the Serial Killer is Oyinkan Braithwaite's debut novel, and this book was such a blast to read. With the size of the book, I would say it's a little closer to a novella than a novel, but there's a ton of amazing content packed into this small book. I adore the cover design, and I knew I needed this one as soon as I saw it.

I would label this one as horror comedy - it's also being called a thriller, so that works, too, but I didn't feel that as much. The set-up is pretty amusing - older sister Korede always has to clean up after younger sister Ayoola's messes. I think a lot of people can relate to this concept, except the book is much more intriguing since Ayoola's messes involve brutally murdering her boyfriends.

As you can see in the synopsis, Ayoola starts dating the man Korede is in love with. This aspect reminded me a lot of 27 Dresses, and it was fun to watch everything get sorted out. You can't help but feel for Korede even though she's totally enabling Ayoola's bad behavior. I really loved the characters in this book.

The book has some time jumps, but it's pretty easy to grasp what's going on after a little bit. There's some background about their childhood so you can see what led up to this. I wish it would have been a little more clear when the jumps were happening, but the chapters are short & everything moves quickly.

My Sister the Serial Killer is a wildly entertaining read, and I'm so glad I picked this up for the Ladies of Horror Fiction Readathon. Oyinkan Braithwaite is one to watch! This story is amusing, but still with a lot of depth, and I highly recommend picking it up."
"2019 read - 2 stars
2021 read - 1 star - Somehow, this book was worse the second time I read it. All the characters are awful with no redeeming qualities. It’s very hard to enjoy the book when you viciously hate every single character. The ending was complete bs."

"I picked this book up because I was drawn to the cover. And damn is my judgment spot on. I LOVED it. I had to force myself to put it down. The characters are one you can totally identify with and the story moves along at a pace that has you turning pages nonstop.
Korede has always watched out for her younger sister Ayoola. And Ayoola needs it. She doesn’t make the best choices. Men are drawn to her like a moth to the flame and she has no problem using and discarding of them. Sometimes literally. So when Ayoola’s latest beau ends up dead, naturally her first instinct is to call big sister Korede to clean up the mess.
I found this book spellbinding. I would have finished it in one sitting if I didn’t have to work the next day; and even then it took every ounce of self control to stop 😂. I just couldn’t wait to see what happened next. And as soon as I finished, I was ready to pick it back up and read it all over again.
Oyinkan Braithwaite is definitely a unique writer. Her narrative is witty and wickedly sharp. I went straight to Goodreads and added most of her books to my “want to read” list. I know we’re not that far into the month of June but I’ve definitely got a front runner for favorite book of the month 👯♀️ 🔪 🤫 "
