Killers hiding in plain sight. Small-town secrets. A girl who knows too much. From the Amazon Charts bestselling author of Unspeakable Things and Bloodline comes a nerve-twisting novel inspired by a shocking true crime. Minnesota, 1977. For the teens of one close-knit community, summer means late-night swimming parties at the quarry, the county fair, and venturing into the tunnels beneath the city. But for two best friends, it's not all fun and games. Heather and Brenda have a secret. Something they saw in the dark. Something they can't forget. They've decided to never tell a soul. But their vow is tested when their friend disappears--the second girl to vanish in a week. And yet the authorities are reluctant to investigate. Heather is terrified that the missing girls are connected to what she and Brenda stumbled upon that night. Desperately searching for answers on her own, she learns that no one in her community is who they seem to be. Not the police, not the boys she met at the quarry, not even her parents. But she can't stop digging because she knows those girls are in danger. She also knows she's next.

"An intense thriller murder mystery that gives you a raw look into the lives of teenage girls during the 1970s. Jess perfectly captures Minnesota culture as she tells a dark story of manipulation, abuse, and sexism. Based on a horrifying true story that in true Minnesotan fashion, no one wants to talk about. "
"I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book when I finished it. Something about the way Jess makes you feel like you are in the story and a part of Pantown itself. I also think this book has my favorite Prologue to date. I would say this book is a great thriller for beginners and an even better portal to remembering what it’s like growing into your teenage self. I’d almost forgotten! "
"I realized I wasn’t a fan of this story when I started to find anything else to do besides continue reading. I envy those who can DNF books but I always feel the need to finish them. I really thought I was going to love this story from the synopsis and other reviews I’ve seen, but this story left little unsaid. Everything from character development to setting was explicitly stated and often repeated throughout the novel. I think this is why I ended up being uninterested in the story. It left very little to the imagination which for me, also stopped me from feeling emotionally invested in the characters or plot. "
"Quick and fast paced. Loved the perspectives of different characters. Twists and turns that were great and unexpected. A recommend read for sure!"

"This was pretty good definitely suspenseful parts of it just gutted me though, I teared up reading certain parts. Even though I could feel it in my bones, knew certain things had happened and who was part of it, it didn't make it any easier to be right. Everyone might not be as emotional reading it, but if you know, you know. "
