NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Years ago, a reclusive mega-bestselling children’s author quit writing under mysterious circumstances. Suddenly he resurfaces with a brand-new book and a one-of-a-kind competition, offering a prize that will change the winner’s life in this absorbing and whimsical novel.“Clever, dark, and hopeful . . . a love letter to reading and the power that childhood stories have over us long after we’ve grown up.”—V. E. Schwab, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRueA BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Washington Post, She Reads, BookreporterMake a wish. . . .Lucy Hart knows better than anyone what it’s like to grow up without parents who loved her. In a childhood marked by neglect and loneliness, Lucy found her solace in books, namely the Clock Island series by Jack Masterson. Now a twenty-six-year-old teacher’s aide, she is able to share her love of reading with bright, young students, especially seven-year-old Christopher Lamb, who was left orphaned after the tragic death of his parents. Lucy would give anything to adopt Christopher, but even the idea of becoming a family seems like an impossible dream without proper funds and stability. But be careful what you wish for. . . . Just when Lucy is about to give up, Jack Masterson announces he’s finally written a new book. Even better, he’s holding a contest at his home on the real Clock Island, and Lucy is one of the four lucky contestants chosen to compete to win the one and only copy. For Lucy, the chance of winning the most sought-after book in the world means everything to her and Christopher. But first she must contend with ruthless book collectors, wily opponents, and the distractingly handsome (and grumpy) Hugo Reese, the illustrator of the Clock Island books. Meanwhile, Jack “the Mastermind” Masterson is plotting the ultimate twist ending that could change all their lives forever.. . . You might just get it.

"This book is everything. All readers have dreamed of visiting a fictional place. Imagine reading a series as a child, a series that makes you believe in wishes, a series that helps you understand wishes have to be worked for, a series that makes you want to be brave. The author lives on the island he writes about. You would dream of going there. Some kids would need to go there- need to escape something in their lives and run away to an island where wishes come true.
Lucy Hart ran away to Clock Island as a twelve year old. As an adult, she's invited back. She's one of 4 contestants, adults who made it to the island as children. They are playing for the only copy of the newest Clock Island book and the rights to do with it what they will. Winning is the answer to Lucy's adult wish- to be able to have a home and a car so she can foster to adopt a little boy whom she loves.
The Wishing Game is fast paced. The characters are all well developed and lovable. The backgrounds of the characters are all woven together to create multi-dimensional characters.
I laughed and I cried. Do yourself a favor and read it.
By the way, The Wishing Game is not in the magical realism genre. The Clockwork Island books would be magical realism, if they existed."
"Sweet and pure."

"This book felt like a warm hug. It was basically Charlie and the Chocolate factory if Willy Wonka was an eccentric author and the chocolate factory was the fantastic setting of your favorite books you read as a child. I loved it! "

"This book is a culmination of books The Inheritance Games, Willy Wonka as well as life experiences rolled into one. It is a quick read but heartfelt and exciting. A magical view of an authors world. Highly recommended. "

"I had high expectations for the book, since everyone seemed to be loving it. I didn't LOVE it, but I also didn't hate it. It was a lot like Willy Wonka mixed with books and a little love story. I guess I just expected a more adventurous novel vs everything ending up okay by the end of the book. "
