"I'm currently rewatching this. It's been awhile but it is lush and makes me breathe deeply seeing the familiar faces and beautiful clothing. Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis all shine in this story of a tragic love triangle in New York. Romance, scandal and grandeur of the age always draw me in. Recommended, indeed. "
"The word sensual is not one I would normally associate with Martin Scorsese’s directing style, but this film practically drips with sensuality. The yearning and fleeting touches and tension between Newland and Ellen was at a level of intensity that took my breath away. That being said, I could not root for them and their love story. I know, I know. The real villain of this film (and its book predecessor) is society and its meaningless expectations and its asinine rules and dictations, but the couple did May so dirty. All I wanted was to protect her from their ongoing betrayal. She was the picture of innocence, which, of course was the point. It was a beautiful film nonetheless and Michelle Pfieffer, Winona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis all played their roles to perfection."
