"I'm going to open my comment by saying that the #ComedyOfErrors Harvey, based on the Pulitzer-winning play, gets 5 bunny-ear-holed fedoras out of 5. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I open that way because there's no way to talk about the movie without spoiling it. So, SPOILER ALERT for everything following.
Harvey is a #fantasy #comedy starring Jimmy Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a man who's able to see a pooka, an Irish fairy in the form of a 6'3.5" white rabbit. This pooka's name happens to be Harvey, and he's invisible to everyone except Elwood and a few others, at times, but he's definitely real, as evidenced by the fact that he owns a hat and interacts with the environment. Harvey's nature as real is revealed a little ways into the movie, so there's a short portion of the film in which the viewer thinks Elwood is mentally ill and hallucinating. Elwood's congenial nature contributes to this, as his pleasantness seems just a little off. However, it soon becomes clear that there's nothing wrong with Elwood. And, if there's nothing wrong with Elwood, then maybe there's something wrong with the people around him. Maybe there's something wrong with his sister, who knows that Harvey is real, but refuses to acknowledge it, and wants Elwood committed for the sake of her and her daughter's social lives. Maybe there's something wrong with his niece, who's so self-interested that she hasn't noticed that she lives with a 6' rabbit. Maybe there's something wrong with the violent and cruel orderly, and the distracted doctor who's hasty to diagnose. Maybe there's something wrong with all of us who are so unpleasant that a pooka hasn't chosen to reveal itself to us, who would think that there's something very off about someone as nice as Elwood Dowd.
The movie is, of course, also an indictment of the psychiatric health institutions of its day, when abuses and dangerous treatments were commonplace. These things still happen, but, thankfully, not like they used to."
"My favorite movie of all time. This was the movie as a child that made me realize black and white movies could be good too, and there’s a few that will never be made better. This is one."
