"Steven spielburg’s masterpiece about the holocaust and told us about Oskar Schindler a German businessman who hired Jews to help make him some money and then…."

"Due to timing and circumstances, I had shockingly never gotten a chance to see it until now. An extremely haunting and well-crafted film made with focus and purpose with a powerful ending (was reminded heavily of JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961) in that regard; highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it). I was especially struck by the gradual unfolding of the story, showing how the Jewish population were systematically moved from the city to the ghetto to the camps - putting the viewer in their perspective - while simultaneously showing Oskar Schindler’s evolution as a person, opening a business for selfish motives at first before going on help as many as he could (with his accountant Itzhak Stern (played to perfection by Ben Kingsley) playing an important role). All aspects of filmmaking are well coordinated and restrained, with Steven Zaillian’s screenplay in particular standing out for presenting the story in a believable manner, blurring the line between documentary and film brilliantly. Phenomenal cinematography, editing, score, direction, and of course performances. The charismatic lead performance by Liam Neeson effectively drives the narrative forward, with strong supporting cast as well (including Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes (incredible as the sadistic commandant) among others). This works as a perfect companion piece to THE ZONE OF INTEREST, effectively showing two sides of human atrocities (THE ZONE OF INTEREST shows from the perpetrator’s side while SCHINDLER’S LIST shows it primarily from the victim’s side), with both being chilling and excellently showcasing the depths of man’s inhumanity to man. Highly recommended.
Interesting fact: Martin Scorsese came close to directing this film (he actually hired Steven Zaillian to write the screenplay), but backed out due to a combination of backlash for making THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and the feeling that he couldn’t do the story justice; Scorsese made CAPE FEAR instead, which Spielberg executive produced."
